Google has updated Gmail's Hindi interface with new strings.

Update : Ersher from Google replies - I talked to our Hindi team and they said that there was a lot of user feedback प्रारूप or प्रेषित types of words were academic and difficult to understand (hence the change). However, I passed along your thoughts just so they are aware. Thanks for the suggestion!

Recently Google updated a few Hindi strings in Gmail. While I was happy to see that “Sign Out” has been updated from "साइन आउट" to “प्रस्थान”, I found that some of the other updated translations are worth review.

New Strings in Gmail's Hindi Interface
  • The string "Drafts" has been updated to "अधूरा इमेल", means "Incomplete email" . "Drafts" is not always incomplete, it may be complete. The correct and exact translation is "प्रारूप".

  • The string "Spams" has been translated as "अनचाहा", means "Unwanted". While there is no exact translation for spam in Hindi but if we translate the dictionary meaning of spam i.e. "irrelevant or inappropriate messages sent on the Internet to a large number of recipients." we will get "व्यर्थ या अनुपयुक्त संदेश..". Now, "Junk" (the term used by other services for spams) translates as "रद्दी" or "व्यर्थ". So the better term would be "व्यर्थ". Since "Junk" and "Irrelevant" both are translated as "व्यर्थ". Anyway it wont be atleast "अनचाहा".
  • “Sent” has been translated as  “भेजी गई ईमेल”, means “sent mail”. Better term  for “sent” is “प्रेषित” .
I have cross posted this in Gmail’s Forum.

Meet new smarter flickr search

Today flickr rolled out its new search interface, which is much better then the older one.By default the new interface is having 'view' setting as 'small' which has reduced page length than the older one as the information about photo is now shown only on pressing 'More Information' 'i' button on the image or by switching to 'Detail' view.

Changing the view to small, medium, detail or slideshow is now more easy as the 'view' menu is now shown on the top of results as in a typical image search engine. A side panel has been added to the page which shows information and links about groups, photographers and tag clusters. Advanced search criteria are now shown before search results.

In its official blog flickr also told that it will bring more advanced features into the page.

What to do If your contacts receive spams from your Gmail ID?

Recently one of my friend told me that his gmail ID was sending spam to all his contacts. After doing some research I reached to the conclusion that he was a victim of spoofing i.e.. those spams were faking the address to hide the real origin of the mail.

Here are the steps to follow if your contacts start pinching you for sending them spams :

  1. Check whether the copy of mails received by your contacts is there in your sent item folder or not,if not then your gmail "account" might has not been used for sending mails and you may be a victim of spoofing.

  2. Check the Recent Activity report (which is given at the bottom ,third last line, of the gmail window ) click details and point out unfamiliar IPs.

  3. This all might be a case of phishing you may have typed your password and email id on a phishing web site OR,

  4. might have given access to your contact list to some website by telling your password and ID

  5. Scan your computer for malware by Lavasoft Ad-Aware: http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php OR- Spybot Search and Destroy: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html (as suggested by google) because the bot might be in your own PC.

  6. Change your password. Choose a strong password which is hard to be guessed ,use a password strength checker like this .

  7. You may also report your problem to gmail's help forum .

  8. See gmail's help about this at http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=50200 and http://groups.google.com/group/Gmail-Help-Message-Delivery-en/browse_thread/thread/e5c554347f7f3221

Hope all this works for you

Meet your new server, your own Computer !

Screenshot of opera unite photo sharing tool

Opera innovates Unite,a browser plugin that makes you capable of transfering data from your web browser to any computer over the internet, without the help of any web server . In simple terms it turns your PC into a webserver.

My PC.. webserver..but why?
Lawrence Eng(Twitter), product analyst for Opera Software writes:

Our computers are only dumb terminals connected to other computers (meaning servers) owned by other people — such as large corporations — who we depend upon to host our words, thoughts, and images. We depend on them to do it well and with our best interests at heart. We place our trust in these third parties, and we hope for the best, but as long as our own computers are not first class citizens on the Web, we are merely tenants, and hosting companies are the landlords of the Internet.
.
.
With Opera Unite, I think we can start moving in a different direction. I hope you’ll join me in imagining a more personal and social computing experience that actually begins to deliver on the old (but not forgotten) promise of the Internet bringing people together in meaningful ways.

Unite assigns a url to the file/folder you want to share (the url can be used in any browser) from your PC/MAC/Linux , and your friend can start downloading it right from the very moment the url is assigned.Unite does provide an option to make your files private(for only you) , public(for everyone) OR limited(for selective person)

Has Twitter stopped notification via SMS in India?

(Notice in the encircled area "India" has been removed from the names of country where the service is available)

Are you also having problem in receiving twitter updates via SMS in India Or getting reply as "This service is not enabled yet" when you try to verify your phone on twitter or send tweets via SMS in India? May be this page is the answer for why.
A week after sending verification code to 5566511 when i clicked twitter.com/devices it showed me the same old message "Verify your number" , and in the right hand side i saw "India" had been removed from the names of country where the service is available (see picture).
I guess no official announcement about this has been made yet.
